The railway to Johannesburg seemed to be very important, with all of the details about it, saying how it was a "white man's wonder", and how "all roads lead to Johannesburg" including the railroad of the train.
I have found a blog that mentions what I think is the same railway mentioned in the book. Here is the link to it.....

I think that the "White man's wonder" is really about living or going to the city of Johannesburg. The way I interpret your post is the road or the riding in the train is the wonder. In fact I think that the railway had very poor locomotives, as it may even look like an industrial train. But in there mind it looks beautiful because they don't have anything else to look up to other than the city and the train to the city.
